A division of General Motors and American automobile manufacturer, Buick is named for David Buick, an automotive pioneer. In 1908, General Motors was established and was one of America’s first marquees. Buick’s manager, William D. Durrant (before the establishment of General Motors), was also

a major investor. Overhead valve engines first showed up courtesy of this automobile maker in 1904.

Buick is well known for large luxury vehicles and as a premium automobile brand in North America’s market. However, though 1.44 million vehicles were sold worldwide in 2016, 80% of automobiles with the Buick brand name were sold in China – its main market. Mexico, Canada, and the United States also

sold their fair share of Buicks.

The Ugly Side: Common Buick Car Problems Encountered

While Buicks are a decent brand of automobile, they are not without their issues. Unfortunately, this can be said about almost every car manufacturer in existence. With Buicks, however, here are a few common problems:

Some 3.64 million vehicles were recalled by General Motors in 2016, one of their biggest recalls. The problem? In a crash, airbags may not deploy because of faulty airbag software. At least three injuries and one death were attributed to this defect! Buicks were included in this recall – specifically 2014 to

2016 LaCrosse models and 2014 to 2017 Encore subcompact SUVs.

Over 1.1 million midsize SUVs were recalled by General Motors in 2014 for problems with the wiring harness on the side airbag. This included the 2008 to 2013 Enclave and could, in a crash, have interfered with airbag deployment.

This was apparently a bad year for General Motors because another 3.1 million vehicles ended up being recalled because airbags were not deploying, and engines were turning off due to an unintended key rotation issue involving the ignition. As of last year, there were still approximately 25% of 2006 to 2011 Lucernes and/or 2005 to 2009 LaCrosse sedans that were not repaired.

Faulty headlamp driver modules were the reason for more than 429,000 vehicles being recalled by GM the following year. In 2006 to 2007 Buick Rainier SUVs and 2006 to 2009 LaCrosse cars, daytime running lights and headlamps failed to illuminate as a result of these faulty modules. As of mid-2018, only a little

more than half of the vehicles with this problem had been repaired.
